ALMA PROFILES

Dr Wally Ahmar (Cardiologist)

National President

Wally Ahmar specialises in interventional and general cardiology. He undertook advanced cardiology training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Wally’s background includes research experience with a science (honours) degree and a PhD. Wally is a member of senior medical staff with MonashHeart, Monash Health. Wally was the first Victorian President of ALMA since March 2012 to July 2016, and has been instrumental in leading the International Lebanese Medical Association. He has been active in helping the formation of the Australian divisions of ALMA and is now the National President of ALMA.

Mr Nezor Houli (Hepatobiliary & Transplant Surgeon)

Victorian Vice President

Nezor Houli is a hepatobiliary and transplant surgeon. He teaches medical students, and is an Examiner for the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS). He privately consults at Ascot Vale Rd Clinic. He publicly consults at hospitals including Northern Health and Western Health. Nezor has been an active member of ALMA and we welcome him in his first term as Vice President.

Dr Malak Sukkar (Chief Strategy, Business & Development Officer at Northern Health)

Secretary

Malak Sukkar has broad local and international experience in the healthcare and tertiary sectors with clinical and business background where she has brought major and lasting improvements to both patient care and financial sustainability. She is currently the Chief Strategy, Business and Development at Northern Health and the Vice Chair of the National Advisory Board of the Australian Catholic University Business School. Malak has been an Executive Committee Member since March 2012 and has been an active member ever since.

Mrs Fadwa Hassan (Credentialed Diabetes Educator)

Fadwa Hassan is a Credentialed Diabetes Educator and Certified Pump Trainer with considerable experience in a number of medical fields. She joined ALMA in March 2012, and enjoys the opportunity to give back to the Lebanese medical community which has so profoundly shaped her life.What's this item about? What makes it interesting? Dr Michael Merhi (General Practitioner)

Michael Merhi is a general practitioner. He has a Bachelor of Science (Hons), PhD and has completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland in 2003. He has worked in The Northern, Austin, Royal Childrens and Mercy hospitals. Dr Merhi is a Fellow of The Royal College of General Practitioners. Michael was elected to the ALMA committee in December 2016. He helps with the administration and organisation of ALMA.

Dr Sumaya Aboulhosn (Dentist)

Victorian President

Sumaya Aboulhosn (Sue Hosn) is a dental practitioner in Thomastown and Victorian President of ALMA. Sue has a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Kiev, Ukraine. Sue has been an active member of ALMA since March 2012 and this is her first term as President, being elected in mid 2016. Sue is passionate about helping the community “there is always something each one of us can give to improve someone's quality of life. If we change nothing, then nothing will change”.

Dr Maroun Francis (Chinese Medical Practitioner)

Treasurer

Maroun Francis has been involved with the Australian Lebanese Medical Association since its inception, and has been serving as the Treasurer since 2012. Working as a Chinese Medical Practitioner, he has been running his practice at the St. Francis Medical Centre in Brunswick since 1999. He specialises in Chinese medicine and acupuncture, and manages patients with an assortment of conditions that are otherwise difficult to treat with conventional medicine.

Miss Mariam Hachem (Research Assistant/Junior Researcher)

Committee Member

Mariam Hachem is a Research Assistant/Junior Researcher at the University of Melbourne - Austin Health in the Department of Medicine, researching diabetes and diabetes complications. Mariam has been an active member of the Australian Lebanese Medical Association since December 2013 where she has been part of the formation of the student body of ALMA, social media and website development, newsletters and helped organise events for ALMA. Mariam to excited to contribute to the betterment of all Lebanese people, particularly in Australia.

Mr Halim Francis (Student)

Halim Francis has been an active Student Member in ALMA since 2015 and was elected to be part of the Committee in 2016. He represents student interests within the Committee and helps with planning events and administrative work. He is currently in his final year of Biomedical Science at Monash University and hope to one day contribute to the medical community as a health care professional.

Dr Jade El-Mohammed (Junior Doctor)

Jade El-Mohamed is currently working as a junior doctor at St Vincent's Health having completed her medical training at the University of Notre Dame in 2016. Jade was elected to the ALMA Committee in December 2016 and has been an active member. Of mixed Lebanese and European heritage, Jade is excited by the missions of the Australian Lebanese Medical Association and proud to contribute as part of the committee.
